AI Writers: It’s Not If, It’s When.

AI Software is rapidly establishing itself in the public consciousness.

Even if you haven’t used an AI platform, you’ve probably heard of the amazing things AI software can do.

This year, OpenAI introduced us to DALL-E 2 - AI software that allows users to generate artwork from text prompts. DALL-E 2 and other software like it has caused a stir in the art world. While the tech enthusiasts and generally curious among us marvelled, some artists saw AI art commodifying their passions and threatening their livelihoods. Controversially, AI-generated artwork won the 2022 edition Colorado State Fair’s annual art competition.

It isn’t just visual art that’s set to get swallowed by the AI revolution. AI writing tools such as Jasper and CopyAI have hit the market in recent years, and are capable of producing pieces of writing as clear, concise and engaging as that of a human writer.

In fact, AI can even write entire novels. In 2018, Ross Goodwin published 1 the road, an experimental novel that emulates Jack Kerouac's On the Road, written entirely by AI. In a world where a creator’s public profile is just as if not more important than the authenticity of creations, it’s not hard to see AI playing an important role in publishing companies’ business models, and continued viability, in the future.

And while they aren’t quite ready to replace highly skilled writers just yet, they aren’t far off. And contrary to what you might think, that’s not a bad thing for writers.

As a writer, you shouldn’t fear AI. In fact, AI writing software presents a wonderful opportunity to copywriters and content writers who want to future-proof their skills.

Is AI writing Software Really That Good?

Let’s open CopyAI and put it to the test:

Here’s my prompt:

“Website copy for the home page of Real Digital, a digital marketing agency in social media marketing services for real estate agents”.

Here’s what the AI came up with:

Real Digital is a digital marketing agency that specialises in social media marketing services for real estate agents.

We're not like other digital agencies. We don't just create and manage your Facebook page or your Instagram account, we help you find the best way to use each platform for your business. Our approach is tailored to suit your business and its goals, so whether you're looking to grow your brand awareness or increase the number of leads coming through, we can help.

We'll start by getting to know you and your business. Then we'll work with you to develop an effective strategy that will deliver results. And because we believe in transparency and honesty, there won't be any surprises—we'll always tell you what's going on and what we're doing with your money.

We've worked with some of Australia's largest real estate agencies and helped them achieve great results for their clients' businesses.

We know what works and what doesn't work when it comes to effective social media strategy—and we're ready to put our expertise at your service.

If this sounds like something that might interest you, get in touch today!

Not bad, right? Note that was one of several options the AI generated in just a few seconds.

Of course, it’s not 100% ready for publishing, but it’s done a lot of the “grunt work” for copywriters by saving them time in gathering their thoughts. While it might have taken at least a few hours to write something like that from scratch, you could edit this and turn it into high-quality, compelling copy in less than an hour. And that shows the real value of today’s AI writing technology for copywriters today.

The Human Writer’s Role in an AI-Dominated Future

AI isn’t going to kill the copywriter, but it’s going to overhaul the industry.

As you can see from the above example, AI really replaces the “brain dump” that’s an integral part of being a copywriter. You’ll still have to know exactly what you want to write, and spend time refining the copy to help it achieve its objective.

While for most writers, myself included, the best part of our job is when we put pen to paper (or fingers to the keyboard), AI will make paying the writer for that time unfeasible for businesses.

Instead, the most successful copywriters in an AI-dominated future will be the ones that understand exactly what the client wants, so they can put their AI on the right track. That means copywriters will need a solid understanding of marketing, business, and how to create and execute a communications strategy.

Copywriters will also need strong editing and UX Writing skills to refine their AI’s output to give it maximum engagement and impact.

So as businesses gradually begin to invest in AI copywriting software to meet their content writing needs, where professional copywriters and copywriting agencies will provide the most value will be:

1) At the input stages by providing strategic planning expertise.

2) At the output stages by choosing the right words to connect with a brand’s target audience.

Develop those skills, and you’ll have future-proofed your copywriting practice.

And if your business is looking to adopt AI writing, get in touch with us and we’ll help you prepare a communications strategy that will help you use AI content writing software efficiently and effectively.

One final word from my AI writing assistant:

It's an exciting time to be a copywriter.

We've seen how AI can write engaging, relevant, and persuasive content—and it's just getting started.

Adopting AI writers will be challenging, but if human writers and AI writers work together, we will become unstoppable and take the written word places neither of us could take it on our own.
